Collective Dynamics of ‘Small-World’ Networks

Nature, 1998 · paper · Computer science

The supplied text begins mid-way through an unrelated paper on asteroid impact simulations, so the article's own content is not shown. Its title indicates it studies the collective dynamics of small-world networks.

1 finding

Substance Table 1 prints C_random = "0.005" for the Power grid, but the paper's own estimate C_random ~ k/n with the legend's "n = 4,941, k = 2.67" gives about 0.00054, an order of magnitude smaller.
  • p. 2 Table 1, Power grid row, C_random column
    0.005
  • p. 2 Table 1 legend
    Power grid: n = 4,941, k = 2.67
  • p. 1 Main text, limiting cases
    C ≈ Crandom ~ k/n ≪ 1 as p → 1

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Page 2 image: Table 1 Power grid row C_random = 0.005; legend gives Power grid n = 4,941, k = 2.67 and says comparisons are with random graphs of the same n and k. The page 1 text (extract line 155) states C ≈ C_random ~ k/n ≪ 1 as p → 1. The other two rows fit k/n at the printed precision (actors 0.00027, C. elegans 0.05). For the power grid, k/n = 0.00054, so 0.005 is about 9.3 times larger. This looks like a dropped zero, but only the authors can say which value they computed. The small-world claim C ≫ C_random (0.080 vs either value) is unaffected.

2 minor (typos and the like; most checked by the judge only)
Typo Ref. 16 reads "Bollabás, B. Random Graphs (Academic, London, 1985)." and the author's surname appears to be misspelled (Bollobás).
  • p. 3 Reference 16
Bollabás, B. Random Graphs (Academic, London, 1985).

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: the author of Random Graphs (Academic Press, 1985) is Béla Bollobás. The page 3 image shows 'Bollabás' in ref. 16, so this is not an extraction artefact.

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: the first editor of Parallel Problem Solving from Nature III (LNCS 866) is Y. Davidor. The page 3 image and crop show 'Davido, Y.' in ref. 25, so this is not an extraction artefact.
