The Strength of Weak Ties
1973 · paper · Sociology
Proposes social network analysis as a bridge between small-scale interaction and large-scale sociological patterns. Argues that overlap between two people's friendship networks grows with tie strength, and explores how weak ties matter for diffusion of information, mobility opportunity and community organization.

3 minor (typos and the like; most checked by the judge only)
Wording The density definition on p. 1370 reads "counting the number of ties observed in the network formed by ego and his friends and dividing it by the ratio of possible ones". Density is observed ties divided by the number of possible ties, so "ratio" should evidently be "number".
- p. 12 Weak ties in egocentric networks, first paragraph
dividing it by the ratio of possible ones
Judge's note: I read the page image (PDF p. 12, journal p. 1370, first paragraph). The printed text says "dividing it by the ratio of possible ones", so this is not an OCR artefact. Dividing a count of ties by a "ratio" of possible ties does not make sense as a definition. The sentence goes on to call the result "density", and the standard definition is observed ties over possible ties, so the intended word is evidently "number". It is a wording slip in a definition. Readers will very likely work out the intended meaning, so I rate it as minor (S3) rather than substantive.

Typo Misspelling: "assym-metric choice unequal, status" should be "asymmetric". The same paragraph spells it correctly ("any asymmetric choices").
- p. 18 Micro and Macro Network Models, para 2
If mutual choice implies equal, and assym-metric choice unequal, status
Judge's note: Page 18 image shows the hyphenated "assym-" / "metric" with a doubled s. It is not an OCR artefact.

Typo Missing word: "But since the DHL model could recast in terms of ties" should read "could be recast".
- p. 18 Micro and Macro Network Models, para 3
But since the DHL model could recast in terms of ties
Judge's note: Page 18 image shows "could recast" with no "be".
