First M87 Event Horizon Telescope Results. I. The Shadow of the Supermassive Black Hole
2019 · paper · Astronomy
Reports Event Horizon Telescope images of the supermassive black hole candidate in galaxy M87, showing an asymmetric bright ring 42 microarcseconds across. The image matches a Kerr black hole shadow, implying a mass of about 6.5 billion Suns.

Substance "ionized gas on scales of 20 pc, i.e., 7000 rg": with the paper's own θg = 3.8 μas and D = 16.8 Mpc, 20 pc is about 65,000 rg, roughly nine times the printed figure.
- p. 6 Section 6, 'Third, adopting an inclination of 17°...' paragraph

Only the authors can say what is right here.
Judge's note: Page 6 image shows plain "20 pc, i.e., 7000 r_g" (no exponent). Table 1 on the page 8 image gives θg = 3.8 ± 0.4 μas and D = 16.8 ± 0.8 Mpc, so one r_g is about 3.1e-4 pc and 20 pc is about 64,600 r_g. Neither prior mass in Table 1 helps: the smaller gas-dynamics mass makes the number larger. No statement in the text defines a different radius or mass for this conversion. Whether 20 pc or 7000 r_g is the slip (2 pc, or 70,000 r_g) is for the authors to say.

Wording The symbol is missing where the temperature-ratio parameter is introduced: "imposed in terms of a single parameter (Mościbrodzka et al. 2016)" has a blank gap, and R_high is used from the next line onward without being named.
- p. 6 Section 6, left column, last paragraph
imposed in terms of a single parameter
- p. 6 Section 6, next line
weakly magnetized (small Rhigh
Judge's note: The crop of page 6 shows a wider-than-normal space between "parameter" and the opening parenthesis, with no symbol. R_high then appears in the following line ("small R_high"), in Figure 4 on page 7 and in Sections 7 and 8, with no definition anywhere in the article. The evident fix is to insert R_high.

Typo The brightness contrast is given as "flux ratio ≳10:1" in the abstract but as ">10:1" in Table 1 and as "contrast of >10:1" in Section 9.

- p. 8 Table 1, Crescent contrast

contrast of >10:1
Judge's note: Page 1 image shows the abstract with the ≳ sign (lost in the text layer); the page 8 image shows Table 1 with ">10:1" and the page 9 image shows "contrast of >10:1". The two relations differ, but this is loose usage for one lower limit and either form could be intended.

Typo The magnetic-flux definition φ ≡ Φ/(Ṁ R_g²)^(1/2) uses a capital "R_g" that is not defined; the gravitational radius is written r_g ≡ GM/c² everywhere else.

- p. 1 Section 1, definition

Judge's note: Page 6 image, second paragraph, shows capital R with subscript g in the definition of φ. Page 1 defines lower-case r_g, which is also used on pages 2 and 6. The notation is inconsistent, though the meaning is clear. The reviewer's further point about a missing factor of c is a units convention and is not confirmed as a defect.

Typo The gas-dynamics shadow diameter is printed as "21.3" with uncertainties +5 and −1.7: the upper uncertainty has no decimal while the other three uncertainties in the sentence (+6.2, −3.5, −1.7) have one.
- p. 2 Section 2, last sentence
21.3
Judge's note: Page 2 image, end of Section 2, shows 37.6 (+6.2, −3.5) μas and 21.3 (+5, −1.7) μas. The inconsistent precision is real. The reviewer's value of +5.5 is not established: scaling the mass bounds linearly gives about +5.4, but the same scaling does not reproduce the other printed uncertainties either (it gives +6.7 where +6.2 is printed), so the uncertainties were evidently not obtained by simple scaling and the omitted digit cannot be recovered from the paper.

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: that the first author of this submitted paper is Daniel Palumbo. The page image shows "Palumbo, F." in the reference; the author list on p. 15 has only "Daniel C. M. Palumbo" (affiliations 4, 11), and the reference's co-authors are all collaboration members. The text on p. 9 cites "Palumbo et al. 2019; F. Roelofs et al. 2019b", so the initial may have been carried over from Roelofs. The work is unpublished and not in the files, so only the authors can confirm.
