Planck 2018 Results. VI. Cosmological Parameters

2020 · paper · Astronomy

Presents cosmological parameters from the final full-mission Planck measurements of the cosmic microwave background, using temperature, polarization and lensing. Finds good consistency with the standard six-parameter flat ΛCDM model, with a more precise reionization optical depth of 0.054.

Substance Eq. (27) prints "Ωm = 0.3158 ± 0.0073" (68 %, TT,TE,EE+lowE+lensing), but the marginalized mean in Tables 1 and 2 is 0.3153 ± 0.0073; 0.3158 is the Table 1 best-fit value.

    Ωm = 0.3158 ± 0.0073
  • p. 15 Table 1, Ωm row
    0.3153 ± 0.0073
  • p. 16 Table 2, TT,TE,EE+lowE+lensing
    0.3153 ± 0.0073
  • p. 15 Table 1, Plik best fit / Plik[1]
    0.3158

Judge's note: Eq. (27) on the p. 24 image reads 0.3158 ± 0.0073. Table 1 (p. 15) has best fit 0.3158 and mean 0.3153 ± 0.0073. Table 2 (p. 16), TT,TE,EE+lowE+lensing column, has 0.3153 ± 0.0073 and ΩΛ = 0.6847. The H0 in the same equation (67.36 ± 0.54) is the mean. So Eq. (27) attaches a marginalized error to the best-fit Ωm. The difference is small (0.0005).

Substance Sect. 5.4 gives "our Planck TT,TE,EE+lowE+lensing estimate from Table 1 of H0 = (67.27 ± 0.60) km s−1Mpc−1"; Table 1 and Eq. (14) give 67.36 ± 0.54 for that combination, and 67.27 ± 0.60 is the TT,TE,EE+lowE (no lensing) value of Eq. (13) and Table 2.

Judge's note: Checked on the page images: p. 26 text; Table 1 on p. 15 (H0 67.36 ± 0.54); Eqs. (13) and (14) and Table 2 on p. 16. The label and the number disagree. The quoted 3.5σ tension holds with either value, so only the authors can say whether the label or the number was intended.

Substance Conclusions (p. 62) define "S8 ≡ σ8Ωm^0.5 = 0.831 ± 0.013", leaving out the /0.3 normalisation used in the definition σ8(Ωm/0.3)^0.5 in Tables 1, 2 and Eq. (32).

    S 8 ≡σ8Ω0.5
  • p. 16 Table 2, row label
    S 8 ≡σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5

Judge's note: I checked the page images. Page 62 prints S8 ≡ σ8Ω^0.5_m with no /0.3. Table 1 (p. 15), Table 2 (p. 16) and Eq. (32) (p. 30) all print σ8(Ωm/0.3)^0.5. Under the printed Conclusions definition, the value would be σ8·sqrt(Ωm) ≈ 0.455, not 0.831. The squared forms are below because the arithmetic field allows no square roots.

Judge's note: Both images confirm the values. Both cite Riess et al. (2018a) for the same local H0 measurement with the same error, and no other version of R18 is mentioned. A search of the text finds 73.48 only in Sect. 5.4 and 73.45 only in the Fig. 35 caption. Sect. 5.4 is where the paper defines R18, so the caption's 73.45 is the likely slip.

Substance Sect. 5.4 gives the inverse-distance-ladder result as "H0 = (67.9 ± 0.8) km s−1Mpc−1 and Ωm = 0.305 ± 0.001". An uncertainty of ±0.001 does not fit the red BAO+Pantheon+D/H BBN+θMC contour in Fig. 17.
  • p. 27 Sect. 5.4, text on Fig. 17

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: I checked the p.27 text and Fig. 17. The red contours span about Ωm 0.28–0.33 at 95%, which suggests σ(Ωm) is about 0.01. The text also calls the result 'very close to' the full Planck likelihood, and that likelihood's Ωm error is several times larger than 0.001. The printed uncertainty looks like a dropped digit, but only the authors can give the correct value.

Substance Sect. 6.2 reads "increasing the significance of AL > 1 to 2.8 σ (99.8 % of parameter samples have AL > 0, so the one-tailed limit is almost exactly 3 σ)". The threshold should be AL > 1.
  • p. 35 Sect. 6.2, right column

  • p. 35 Sect. 6.2, after Eq. (36)
    99.8 % of parameter samples have AL > 0

Judge's note: The p.35 image prints 'AL > 0'. With AL = 1.180 ± 0.065, essentially every sample has AL > 0. The 99.8% fraction and the one-tailed ~3σ only make sense for the fraction of samples with AL > 1.

Judge's note: The Fig. 8 legend on the p. 20 image has a red solid line for 'None of these corrections' and a blue solid line for 2015. The panels show both red and blue solid curves. Sect. 5.7 itself attributes the 2015 cluster analysis to XXIV (2016). The XX (2016) citations on p.31 (before and after Eq. 34, and in the Zubeldia & Challinor paragraph) therefore point to the wrong paper. They should cite XXIV (2016).

Judge's note: Viewed abstract (p1), Intro (p3), Sect. 5.4 (p26), Conclusions (p62). Grep finds 3.6σ only in the abstract (and an unrelated neutron-lifetime line). 3.5σ matches R18 (73.48±1.66) vs Table 1 67.36±0.54; 4.4σ matches Riess 2019 (74.03±1.42); 3.6σ is reproducible only with Riess 2018b (73.52±1.62, quoted on p26) but the paper never states that comparison. The data comparison behind the abstract figure is unstated; authors should say which local measurement and Planck combination the abstract uses.

Judge's note: On the page images (p.29 and p.37) the exponents are attached to σ8, not to Ωm, so this is not an extraction artefact. Eq. (5) defines the lensing combination as σ8Ωm^0.25. As printed, the text names a different parameter combination. The fix is to swap the exponents onto Ωm.

Judge's note: On p. 15, the Table 1 Plik column gives 0.832 ± 0.013 (best fit 0.8331; CamSpec 0.828; combined 0.830). On p. 16, Table 2 TT,TE,EE+lowE+lensing gives 0.832 ± 0.013. On p. 30, Sect. 5.6 says 'S8 = 0.832 ± 0.013'. The same Conclusions bullet quotes σ8 = 0.811 and Ωm = 0.315, which are the baseline values. Judge's note: In the Appendix A text (p. 69), the previous paragraph discusses the TT/TE/EE differences between Table A.1 (CamSpec) and Table 2 (Plik). Table 1 compares only the combined TT,TE,EE+lowE+lensing results from Plik and CamSpec. Fig. A.1 is described as comparing parameters from TT, TE and EE separately using CamSpec.
