Observation of a New Particle in the Search for the Standard Model Higgs Boson with the ATLAS Detector at the LHC

2012 · paper · Physics

Reports a search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector, combining proton-collision data at 7 and 8 TeV. It finds a new neutral boson with mass about 126 GeV, at 5.9 standard deviations, compatible with the Higgs boson.

Reference or label Section 6.3 says the signal theoretical uncertainties "are de-scribed in Section 9", but they are described in Section 8 (item 6, 'Theory uncertainties'); Section 9 is 'Results'.

  • p. 15 Section 6.3, first paragraph
These are de-scribed in Section 9.
  • p. 7 Section 4.3
The theoretical uncertainties associated with the sig-nal are described in detail in Section 8.

Judge's note: On p15 the image reads 'These are de-scribed in Section 9.' In the text, Section 8 'Correlated systematic uncertainties' (p17) item 6 gives the QCD-scale, PDF and branching-ratio uncertainties on the signal. Section 9 is 'Results', and a search of it found no discussion of signal theory uncertainties. The parallel pointers in Sections 4.3 and 5.6, and the introduction's outline, all point to Section 8.

Wording Table 1 caption says "“PYTHIA” indicates that PYTHIA6 and PYTHIA8 are used for simulations of √s = 7 TeV and √s = 8 TeV data, respectively", but the text below says PYTHIA6 is used "for 7 TeV samples and 8 TeV samples produced with MadGraph [70, 71] or AcerMC"; the table rows "AcerMC [61]+PYTHIA" and "MadGraph+PYTHIA" carry no exception marker.
  • p. 4 Table 1 caption
“PYTHIA” indicates that PYTHIA6 and PYTHIA8 are
  • p. 4 Section 3, paragraph after Table 1
    PYTHIA6 [69] (for 7 TeV samples and 8 TeV sam-ples produced with MadGraph [70, 71] or AcerMC)
  • p. 4 Table 1, rows tqb, WZ and Wγ*
    AcerMC [61]+PYTHIA

Judge's note: Checked on the page 4 image. The caption states the rule without qualification, and the paragraph directly under the table gives an exception for MadGraph and AcerMC 8 TeV samples, which are exactly the rows labelled +PYTHIA (tqb, WZ, Wγ*). The text does supply the correct information, so this is an unqualified caption, not a wrong fact; a reader of the caption alone would assume PYTHIA8 for those 8 TeV samples.

Typo Section 4.3: "has been found to be negligible ." has a stray space before the full stop.
  • p. 7 Section 4.3, right column
has been found to be negligible .
  • p. 7 Sec. 4.3
    found to be negligible .

Judge's note: Visible on the page 7 image, right column: a clear gap between 'negligible' and the full stop. Not an extraction artefact.

Typo Section 4.3: "served for m4l > 160 GeV" uses a plain italic l in the subscript where the running text elsewhere uses m4ℓ.
  • p. 7 Section 4.3, right column
    served for m4l > 160 GeV

Judge's note: Page 7 image: the subscript in 'm4l > 160 GeV' is a plain italic l, while the same column and the left column print m4ℓ with the script ℓ (for example 'm4ℓ = 600 GeV', and the Figure 2 caption). Notation inconsistency in body text, cosmetic only.

Typo Table 4 caption: "is also given for the 8 TeVdata" is missing a space between 'TeV' and 'data'.
  • p. 10 Table 4 caption
    8 TeVdata

Judge's note: Page 10 image, Table 4 caption, third line: 'TeVdata' is printed run together.

Typo Typo on p16, Section 6.3: "initial state an final state radiation" should read "initial state and final state radiation".
  • p. 16 Section 6.3, top of left column
    initial state an final state
  • p. 16
initial state an final state radiation

Judge's note: The page image shows 'an final state', so this is not an extraction artefact.

Typo Figure 9 caption: "The horizontal dashed lines indicate the p-values corresponding to significances of 1 to 6 σ", while the figure draws and labels lines from 0σ to 6σ.

  • p. 20 Figure 9, right-hand axis labels
    0σ

Judge's note: Page 20 image: the right-hand edge of Figure 9 carries labels 0σ, 1σ, 2σ, 3σ, 4σ, 5σ, 6σ, each on a dashed horizontal line; the caption says 1 to 6 σ. The 0σ line (p0 = 0.5) is a trivial reference, so nothing is misread; the caption simply omits it.

Typo The title of reference [35] is printed as "Higgs production at the lHC" with a lowercase 'l'.
  • p. 23 Reference [35]
    Higgs production at the lHC
  • p. 23
    Higgs production at the lHC,

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: whether the cited JHEP article's own title uses 'lHC'. The image of p23 shows 'Higgs production at the lHC'. Other references in the same list, such as [33] and [34], use 'LHC'. This is cosmetic, and only the authors can say whether it copies the original title.

Typo Reference [99] reads "OPAL Collaboration Collaboration, K. Ackerstaff et al."; the word 'Collaboration' is duplicated.
  • p. 24 Reference [99]
    OPAL Collaboration Collaboration

Judge's note: Crop C040-a shows the duplicated word on the page. Other collaboration entries (e.g. [96]-[98] 'ATLAS Collaboration') have the word once. Evident fix: 'OPAL Collaboration'.

Typo Reference [140] gives the journal as "Dokl. Akad. Nawk. USSR 60 (1948) 207"; 'Nawk.' appears to be a misspelling of 'Nauk'.

    Nawk. USSR 60 (1948) 207

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: the journal's name is Doklady Akademii Nauk SSSR, so the abbreviation should read 'Nauk'. Crop C041-a confirms the page prints 'Nawk.' (also with the bold face applied to 'USSR 60' rather than the volume alone). Cosmetic.

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: Sun Yat-sen University is located in Guangzhou, and 'Guangzhou' is the standard spelling. The image of p38 shows 'Guanzhou'.
