Particle Creation by Black Holes

1975 · paper · Physics

Shows that quantum effects make black holes create and emit particles as if they were hot bodies, so they slowly lose mass and eventually vanish. Primordial black holes below about 10^15 grams would have evaporated by now.

Substance Section 4 prints the frequency thresholds as "ω>M" and "ω<M" (five times), e.g. "fairly well for modes hω with ω>M but not for those with ω<M"; the paper's own argument requires M^-1.
  • p. 18 Section 4, paragraph after Eq. (4.1)
    fairly well for modes hω with ω>M but not for those with ω<M
  • p. 18 Section 4, same paragraph
    particles with ω<M because they will have a wavelength bigger than his particle detector which must be smaller than M
  • p. 2 Section 1
    whose characteristic frequency ω is high compared to B^½
  • p. 18 Section 4, paragraph after Eq. (4.1)
    for modes hω with ω>M but not for those with ω<M

Judge's note: On the page 18 image the inequalities have no exponent in any of the five places. The same sentence justifies ω<M by "a wavelength bigger than his particle detector which must be smaller than M", which in G=c=ħ=1 units is ω<M^-1. The introduction (page 2 image) gives a coordinate patch of radius B^-½ and well-defined modes for ω high compared to B^½; with patch radius ~M (page 17), B^½ ~ M^-1. The stated energy-density indeterminacy M^-4 also equals B^2 with B ~ M^-2. No passage redefines M. The threshold should be M^-1.

Reference or label Eq. (3.8) prints "−(ω−eφ)κ^-1{log(v0−v) − logH}" with lower-case φ (the scalar field symbol), whereas the surrounding text uses the electrostatic potential Φ ("ω replaced by ω−eΦ").
  • p. 17 Eq. (3.8)
    −(ω−eφ)κ^-1{log(v0−v) − logH}
  • p. 17 Text before and after Eq. (3.8)
    with ω replaced by ω−eΦ

Judge's note: On the page 17 image the glyph in (3.8) is a lower-case italic φ, visibly different from the capital Φ in "−κ^-1(ω−eΦ)(logε−logC)", "Φ=K^aA_a" and "ω−eΦ" on the same page. φ is the scalar field in Eq. (3.5) on page 16. Wrong symbol; the fix is evident.

Judge's note: The page 22 image prints "187—20" followed by a wider gap before "(1967)". Other entries give full end pages (e.g. "529—548"), so this is not an abbreviation convention. The defect is evident on the page; the correct end page cannot be determined from the files. The missing details in refs 20 and 23 are handled under C027 and C028.

Wording Abstract gives the temperature as "≈10^-6 (M☉/M) °K", but the introduction gives "of the order of 10^26 M^-1 °K, where M is the mass, in grams" with solar mass "(10^33 g)"; the two differ by a factor of ten.
  • p. 1 Abstract
    ≈10^-6 (M☉/M) °K
  • p. 3 Section 1, last paragraph
    the order of 10^26 M^-1 °K, where M is the mass, in grams of the black hole. For a black hole of solar mass (10^33 g)
  • p. 3 Section 1, last paragraph
    the order of 10^26 M^-1 °K, where M is the mass, in grams of the black hole
  • p. 3 Section 1, last paragraph
    a black hole of solar mass (10^33 g)

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Read the abstract on p1 and the last paragraph of p3 on the page images; both are printed as quoted. With the paper's own solar mass of 10^33 g the abstract's form is 10^27/M °K against 10^26/M °K in the introduction. Page 4 ("about 10^12 °K ... mass got down to about 10^14 g") follows the 10^26 form. Both are order-of-magnitude statements ("≈", "of the order of") and no text reconciles them, so this is a real but loose inconsistency that only the author can settle.

Wording The first law of thermodynamics is printed as "dU = TdS + pdV".
  • p. 5 Section 1, unnumbered equation after the black-hole first law
    dU = TdS + pdV

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: the standard first law, with p the pressure and V the volume, is dU = TdS − pdV. The p5 image prints a plus sign. The paper does not define p or V or state a sign convention, and the equation serves only as an analogy to dM = (κ/8π)dA + ΩdJ, so the argument is unaffected.

Wording Section 4 says "since all the time dependence of the metric in Fig. 4 is in the collapsing phase"; Fig. 4 is captioned as the wave solution p_ω, while the collapse Penrose diagram is Fig. 3.
  • p. 17 Section 4, first paragraph
    since all the time dependence of the metric in Fig. 4 is in the collapsing phase
  • p. 10 Fig. 4 caption
    The solution pω of the wave equation has an infinite number of cycles near the event horizon
  • p. 7 Fig. 3 caption
    The Penrose diagram of a spherically symmetric collapsing body producing a black hole.
  • p. 17 Section 4, first paragraph
    all the time dependence of the metric in Fig. 4 is in the collapsing phase

Judge's note: Viewed Fig. 4 (page 10) and Fig. 3 (page 7). Fig. 3 is the captioned Penrose diagram of the collapsing body. Fig. 4 redraws the same collapse spacetime (collapsing body, event horizon, scri±) with constant-phase surfaces added, so a reference to "the metric in Fig. 4" is defensible. Either figure could be intended; not a demonstrable pointer error.

Wording The initial vacuum is defined as |0> in (2.9) ("a_i|0> = 0 for all i.") but written "<0_-|b_i† b_i|0_-> = Σ_j |β_ij|^2" in (2.10) and "<0_-|T_ab|0_->" in (4.5), with the subscripted symbol never defined.
  • p. 9 Eq. (2.9) and Eq. (2.10)
    a_i|0> = 0 for all i.
  • p. 9 Eq. (2.10)
    <0_-|b_i† b_i|0_-> = Σ_j |β_ij|^2
  • p. 20 Eq. (4.5)
    <0_-|T_ab|0_->

Judge's note: The p9 image shows |0> in the sentence and in Eq. (2.9), and |0_-> in Eq. (2.10) immediately below. The p20 image shows |0_-> in Eq. (4.5). A text search found no definition of |0_->. The meaning (vacuum on past null infinity) is evident, so this is a notational inconsistency only.

Report a problem with this finding
Wording Eq. (2.30), introduced as "the phase of p(2)ωlm", is printed "− (iω/κ)(log(v0−v) − logH)" with a factor i, whereas the parallel phase in (2.17) is "− (ω/κ)(log(v0−v) − logD − logC)" and the phases just above (2.30) are "−ω/κ (log ε − log E)".
  • p. 14 Eq. (2.30)
    − (iω/κ)(log(v0−v) − logH)
  • p. 11 Eq. (2.17)
    − (ω/κ)(log(v0−v) − logD − logC)

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: The p14 image shows the factor i in (2.30). Eq. (2.31) then writes L exp{−(iω/κ)[log(v0−v) − log H]}, so (2.30) as printed is the exponent, not the phase. The p11 image shows (2.17) real, with the i appearing only in the exponential (2.18). A notational slip; the results (2.31) to (2.33) are unaffected.

  • p. 6 Text describing Fig. 1
    the two diagonal lines r=2M

Judge's note: Fig. 1 is on PDF p7 (journal p205); its label reads "r = 2m" with a lower-case m in the image. The text and Eq. (2.1) on p6 use 2M. The crop C006-a shows only the p6 text, not the figure. Lettering inconsistency in the figure; the meaning is clear.

Only the authors can say what is right here.
