Electrophoretic Transfer of Proteins from Polyacrylamide Gels to Nitrocellulose Sheets: Procedure and Some Applications
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1979 · paper · Biomedicine
Describes a method for electrophoretically transferring proteins from polyacrylamide gels to nitrocellulose sheets, preserving the gel's band pattern. Immobilized proteins can then be detected by autoradiography or antibody-based methods, down to about 100 picograms.

Reference or label Ref. 6 reads "Showe, M. K., Isobe, E. & Onorato, L. (1970) J. Mol. Biol. 107, 55-69". A 1970 date for volume 107 conflicts with the paper's own dating of J. Mol. Biol. vol. 62 to 1971 (ref. 22), vol. 98 to 1975 (ref. 7) and vol. 106 to 1976 (ref. 23).
- p. 5 References, ref. 6
Showe, M. K., Isobe, E. & Onorato, L. (1970) J. Mol. Biol. 107,
Judge's note: The page 5 image shows "(1970)" and "107" in ref. 6. Since journal volumes run in order, volume 107 cannot come before volume 62 (1971) in the same list. The year is most likely 1976. That exact value rests on outside knowledge, but the inconsistency can be seen inside the reference list.

6 minor (typos and the like; most checked by the judge only)
Wording Results text says "In each case, the lower gel is a control with preimmune serum", but the Fig. 4 legend says "In each case the lower strip is a control with preimmune antiserum". The panels show blot strips, not gels.
- p. 4 Results, Fig. 4 description
In each case, the lower gel is a control with preimmune serum.
- p. 4 Fig. 4 legend
In each case the lower strip is a control
Judge's note: Checked both passages on page 4. Fig. 4 shows nitrocellulose blot strips stained with conjugated antibodies, so the legend's "strip" is accurate and the text's "gel" misdescribes what is shown. This is a minor wording slip.

Typo Affiliation prints the company name as "Hoffman–La Roche" with a single n; the usual spelling is Hoffmann-La Roche.
- p. 1 Affiliations
Hoffman-La Roche
Only the authors can say what is right here.
Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: the company's name is spelled Hoffmann-La Roche. The page 1 crop shows "Hoffman–La Roche" with a single n, so this is not an extraction artefact.

Typo Misspelling "after electrophoresis in polacrylamide"; it should read "polyacrylamide".
- p. 4 Results, paragraph introducing Fig. 5
polacrylamide
- p. 4
polacrylamide, we should also be able to determine which
Judge's note: The page 4 crop shows "polacrylamide" without the y. The word is spelled correctly everywhere else in the paper.

Typo Ref. 15 reads "Avrameas, S. & Guilbert, B. (1971 Eur. J. Immunol. 1, 394-396." and is missing the closing parenthesis after the year.
- p. 5 References, ref. 15
Avrameas, S. & Guilbert, B. (1971 Eur. J. Immunol.
- p. 5 Reference 15
Avrameas, S. & Guilbert, B. (1971 Eur. J. Immunol. 1, 394-
Judge's note: The page 5 image confirms that no ")" follows 1971. Every other entry closes the year in parentheses.

Typo Ref. 19 gives the second author as "Laskey, R. L."; the Bonner & Laskey 1974 Eur. J. Biochem. 46, 83-88 co-author is R. A. Laskey.

Bonner, W. M. & Laskey, R. L. (1974)
Only the authors can say what is right here.
Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: the co-author's initials are R. A. The page 5 image shows "Bonner, W. M. & Laskey, R. L. (1974)".

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: the co-author of Gerber et al. (1979) Gastroenterology 76, 139-143 is O. Lebwohl. The page 5 image shows "Lebewohl, O." in ref. 27.
