The Replication of DNA in Escherichia coli
1958 · paper · Biomedicine
Uses density-gradient centrifugation in cesium chloride to follow heavy nitrogen (N15) labeled DNA in E. coli transferred to ordinary nitrogen medium. The aim is to test how parental DNA atoms are distributed among progeny molecules during replication.

Reference or label Ref. 24: "M. Delbrück, these PROCEEDINGS, 40, 783, 1955." The year does not fit the volume-year pattern of the other PNAS citations (vol. 40 would be 1954).

M. Delbrück, these PROCEEDINGS, 40, 783, 1955.
- p. 12 reference 24
M. Delbruck, these PROCEEDINGS, 40, 783, 1955.
Only the authors can say what is right here.
Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: that PNAS vol. 40 (and Delbrück's paper at p. 783) appeared in 1954. Inside the files the pairs are consistent: vol. 44 = 1958 (running head), 43 = 1957 (refs 8, 10), 42 = 1956 (ref. 7), and 38 = 1952, 39 = 1953 in the footnotes of the preceding article on p. 1. That pattern puts vol. 40 in 1954, but the page 12 image prints 1955.

Typo Introduction, first sentence: "bacterial transformation and bacteriaphage infection" should read "bacteriophage".
- p. 1 Introduction, first sentence
bacterial transformation and bacteriaphage infection
- p. 1 Introduction, first sentence
bacteriaphage infection
Judge's note: The page 1 image shows "bacteriaphage". Page 8 spells it "T4 bacteriophage DNA", so this is a misprint and not an extraction artefact.

Judge's note: The page 9 image shows "the" at the end of one line and again at the start of the next, so the word is printed twice.

Typo The co-editor of The Nucleic Acids (Academic Press, 1955) is "J. N. Davidson" in ref. 1 but "J. D. Davidson" in ref. 17.

E. Chargaff and J. N. Davidson
Judge's note: The page 12 image shows both forms. It is the same book, publisher and year, so the initials should match. The internal inconsistency is enough to confirm. The view that J. N. is the right form also agrees with ref. 1.
