Poisson Surface Reconstruction

2006 · paper · Computer science

Casts surface reconstruction from oriented points as a spatial Poisson problem, solved globally rather than by local partitioning and blending. The adaptive multiscale algorithm scales with model size and, on public scan data, reconstructs surfaces with greater detail than before.

Substance In Section 4.5 both density-weighted definitions of the vector field, V(q) ≡ Σ_s 1/W_D̂(s.p) Σ_{o∈Ngbr} α_{o,s}F_o(q), omit the factor s.N that appears in Equation 3, so as printed the right-hand side is a scalar.

Judge's note: On page 4, Equation 3 reads V(q) ≡ Σ_s Σ_{o∈Ngbr_D(s)} α_{o,s}F_o(q) s.N. On page 6, the text says Equation 3 is modified only by adding the 1/W weight, and later by adapting the depth. Both printed formulas (crops C005-a and C005-b) end in α_{o,s}F_o(q) with no s.N, while the left-hand side is the vector V(q). The intended fix, restoring s.N, is evident from Equation 3.

Wording Section 5.3 says "the running time, the memory overhead, and the number of output triangles increases roughly by a factor of four" per depth level, but Table 1 Peak Memory goes from 75 (depth 8) to 155 (depth 9), about ×2.1.

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: I checked Table 1 on the page 8 image: Peak Memory is 19, 75, 155 and 699. The memory steps are ×3.95, ×2.07 and ×4.51. The time and triangle steps all fall between about 4 and 5. The 8→9 memory step does not fit the stated factor. Only the authors can say whether 155 is a misprint or the claim is loose.

Typo Stray article in Section 2: "a triangle mesh that interpolates all or a most of the points" should read "all or most of the points".

triangle mesh that interpolates all or a most of the points.
  • p. 2 Section 2, Surface reconstruction, para 2
interpolates all or a most of the points

Judge's note: The page 2 crop shows "interpolates all or a most of the points." as printed in the left column. The 'a' is extraneous.

Judge's note: The page 2 crop shows "numer-ous applications areas." in the Poisson problems paragraph. This is a minor grammatical slip.

Typo Reference [FLW02] prints the author as "LISCHINKSI D."; the expected spelling is Lischinski.

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: the co-author's surname is spelled Mitchell. The page 10 crop shows lower-case "mitchel T." among capitalised small-caps names, so the typesetting inconsistency is visible in the file.
