The Ball-Pivoting Algorithm for Surface Reconstruction

IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, 1999 · paper · Computer science

Introduces the Ball-Pivoting Algorithm, which builds a triangle mesh from a point cloud by pivoting a ball of fixed radius around mesh edges. Tested on scans with millions of points, it is reported as efficient in memory and time.

Substance Page 9, Sec. V-A: "multiplying the original 71 meshes to over 7500" disagrees with Fig. 10, where the out-of-core Dragon row lists "1452" under # Scans.
  • p. 9 Section V-A Experiments, 4th paragraph
multiplying the original 71 meshes to over 7500
  • p. 8 Fig. 10 table, Out of core, Dragon row, # Scans
    1452

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Page 9 image prints "multiplying the original 71 meshes to over 7500". The Fig. 10 table on page 8 gives 71 scans for the in-core Dragon (matching the text) and 1452 for the out-of-core Dragon. No row has a scan count above 1452, and the three out-of-core rows sum to 3344, so 7500 is not a total either. The caption defines # Scans as the number of range images, and I found no statement in the text reconciling the two figures. Only the authors can say which is right.

Reference or label Reference [12]: "Computer Graphics Proceedings, Annual Conference Series, pp. 415–412." — the end page is lower than the start page.

    pp. 415–412
  • p. 10
Computer Graphics Proceedings, Annual Conference Series, pp. 415–412.

Judge's note: Read on the page 10 image, reference [12]: printed "pp. 415–412". The range is impossible as printed, and that is checkable from the page alone. The reviewers' proposed end page (421, a digit transposition) is plausible but cannot be verified from the files.

10 minor (typos and the like; most checked by the judge only)
Wording Page 4, Sec. III: "If the data is noise-free and ρ is smaller than the local curvature, all points will be interpolated" compares the radius ρ with curvature; the paper's own condition elsewhere is in terms of radius of curvature.
  • p. 4 Section III, paragraph beginning "Areas of density higher than ρ"
If the data is noise-free and ρ is smaller than the local curvature
  • p. 3 Section III, after the two sampling conditions
the radius of curvature of the manifold is larger than ρ
  • p. 3 Fig. 3 caption (c)
When the curvature of the manifold is larger than 1/ρ
  • p. 4 Section III, paragraph beginning 'Areas of density higher than ρ'
ρ is smaller than the local curvature

Judge's note: Page 4 image, left column, prints "ρ is smaller than the local curvature". Page 3 image prints "the radius of curvature of the manifold is larger than ρ" and the Fig. 3(c) caption prints "When the curvature of the manifold is larger than 1/ρ ... features will be missed". The page 4 wording is therefore inconsistent with the paper's own two precise statements; "local radius of curvature" is evidently meant. This is a wording slip, and the intended meaning is recoverable.

Typo Page 2, Sec. II-A: "an error that is orders of magnitude smaller than the minumum feature size" — "minumum" should be "minimum".
  • p. 2 Section II-A, 3rd paragraph
    smaller than the minumum
  • p. 2 Sec. II-A
    minumum
  • p. 2 Sec. II-A
    distance funtion
  • p. 3 Sec. III
    The thorem can be

Judge's note: Read on the page 2 image, left column: the word is printed "minumum". The other misspellings some reviewers bundled here (funtion, thorem, algortihm) are judged in C002, C003 and C007.

Typo Page 2, Sec. II-A: "the points on the grid where the distance funtion is zero" — "funtion" should be "function".
  • p. 2 Section II-A, 4th paragraph
where the distance funtion is zero
  • p. 2 Section II-A, 4th paragraph
    the distance funtion is zero

Judge's note: Read on the page 2 image, left column: printed "funtion". The same paragraph spells "signed-distance function" correctly two lines earlier.

Typo Page 3, Sec. III: "The thorem can be easily extended to surfaces" — "thorem" should be "theorem".
  • p. 3 Section III, right column, paragraph beginning "In [16]"

Judge's note: Read on the page 3 image, right column, paragraph beginning "In [16]": printed "thorem".

Typo Page 4, Sec. IV: "links to the previous and next edge along in the same loop of the front" — superfluous word ("along in").
  • p. 4 Section IV, 2nd paragraph
links to the previous and next edge along in

Judge's note: Read on the page 4 image, right column: printed "next edge along in the same loop of the front". Two prepositions in a row; one is left over.

  • p. 6 IV-D, glue operation
    created by the algortihm

Judge's note: Read on the page 9 image, right column, "Flexible, efficient, and robust" bullet: printed "Pentiun II PC". The paper spells it "Pentium II" on page 1, in Sec. V and in the Fig. 10 caption.

Judge's note: Read on the page 9 image, reference [5]: printed "Proceeding of Eurographics '98". References [6], [9], [11], [12], [19] and [22] all use "Proceedings". Cosmetic inconsistency within the paper's own reference list.

  • p. 10 Reference [15]

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: the conference city is spelled "Lausanne". The page 10 image does print "Laussane" in reference [15]. The correct spelling appears nowhere else in the files to compare against.
