Reality-Based Interaction: A Framework for Post-WIMP Interfaces

Proceedings of the SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2008 · paper · Computer science

Proposes Reality-Based Interaction as a unifying concept for post-WIMP interfaces, which build on users' knowledge of the everyday non-digital world. Offers a framework to compare research directions and analyze designs, applied to four case studies.

Reference or label Figure 3 labels the third quality "plasticity", but the text lists and discusses it as "Versatility" and says the figure shows "the qualities described above, on the right side".
  • p. 5 Figure 3, right-hand labels
    plasticity
  • p. 5 Tradeoffs bullet list
Versatility: users can perform many tasks from different application domains
  • p. 6 Summary
traded against the qualities described above, on the right side

Judge's note: The page 5 image shows Figure 3's right-hand labels: expressive power, efficiency, plasticity, ergonomics, accessibility, practicality. The bullet list and the subsection heading 'Reality vs. Versatility' use 'Versatility', and 'plasticity' appears nowhere in the text. The page 6 Summary explicitly ties the right side of the figure to the qualities described above.

Reference or label Reference 39 reads "Shneiderman, B. Direct Manipulation. A Step Beyond Programming Languages. IEEE Transactions on Computers, 16 (8). 57." It names the venue as IEEE Transactions on Computers, and it gives no year and only a start page.
  • p. 10 Reference 39
    IEEE Transactions on Computers, 16 (8). 57.

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: that Shneiderman's 'Direct Manipulation: A Step Beyond Programming Languages' appeared in IEEE Computer 16(8), 1983, pp. 57-69, and not in IEEE Transactions on Computers. I opened the crop, and it shows ref 39 exactly as quoted: the venue is in italics as 'IEEE Transactions on Computers', followed by '16 (8). 57.' with no year and no end page. Both omissions can be seen on the page. The citing text on p.9 ('generation of user interfaces [39]') gives no year either, so nothing elsewhere in the paper fills the gap. The venue name cannot be checked from the files, so the authors need to confirm it.

11 minor (typos and the like; most checked by the judge only)
Wording The field-study sample is described as "We also interviewed a few researchers" and then as "The interviews were done with a dozen graduate students from the Media Lab".
  • p. 4 Informal Field Study
We also interviewed a few researchers about their design
  • p. 4 Informal Field Study
done with a dozen graduate students from the Media Lab

Judge's note: Page 4, Informal Field Study (checked in the text layer at lines 378-380, which matches the crop location). 'A few' and 'a dozen' describe the same group of interviewees, so the sample size is loosely or inconsistently stated. This is a wording issue only.

Wording The paragraph opens "The iPhone applications of iPod, Safari, Phone and Photos also use body awareness and skills (BAS)", but the orientation example given for 'the other three' ends with the tag "(NP)" and not BAS.
  • p. 7 Case Study 2, RBI Themes, third paragraph
also use body awareness and skills (BAS) in their interaction design
  • p. 7 Case Study 2, same paragraph
the image is always right side up (NP).

Judge's note: Page 7 image, Case Study 2, RBI Themes, third paragraph. Only the face-proximity example could illustrate BAS. The inertial-orientation example offered for the other three applications is tagged NP. Which theme the paragraph is meant to illustrate is left unclear. The authors may intend both themes, so this is recorded as an observation.

Typo Stray comma between adjective and noun: "can have many additional, interpretations".
  • p. 2 RBI Themes, first paragraph
    can have many additional, interpretations

Judge's note: The page 2 image (RBI Themes paragraph) shows the comma after 'additional'. It should be removed.

Second check: none (judge only)

Typo Missing possessive apostrophe: "systems may compute users location and orientation" (should be "users' location").
  • p. 2 Environment Awareness and Skills, last paragraph
may compute users location and orientation
  • p. 2 Environment Awareness and Skills, second paragraph
systems may compute users location and orientation

Judge's note: The page 2 image (end of the EAS section) shows 'users location' with no apostrophe. The same sentence then has 'the user’s position'.

Second check: none (judge only)

Report a problem with this finding
Typo The theme defined as "Environment Awareness & Skills" / "Environment Awareness and Skills (EAS)" is labelled "environmental awareness & skills" in Figure 3 and "environmental awareness and skills (EAS)" in Case Study 2.
  • p. 5 Figure 3, left-hand labels
    environmental awareness & skills
  • p. 2 RBI Themes list / section heading
    Environment Awareness and Skills (EAS)
  • p. 2 RBI Themes list
    Environment Awareness & Skills

Judge's note: The page 2 image shows the bullet 'Environment Awareness & Skills' and the heading 'Environment Awareness and Skills (EAS)'. The page 5 Figure 3 left label reads 'environmental awareness & skills', and the page 7 iPhone text reads 'environmental awareness and skills (EAS)'. The naming of a framework term is inconsistent; the meaning is the same.

Typo Comma between subject and verb: "Figure 3, further illustrates these tradeoffs."
  • p. 5 Tradeoffs, paragraph after bullet list
Figure 3, further illustrates these tradeoffs
  • p. 5 Tradeoffs, paragraph after list
Figure 3, further illustrates these tradeoffs.

Judge's note: The page 5 image (left column, paragraph after the bullet list) shows the comma after 'Figure 3'.

Typo Missing spaces before citations: "Coutrix and Nigay[14] as well as Dubois and Gray[17]". The QOC expansion "Questions Options and Criteria (QOC)" also lacks the commas used in ref 30's title "Questions, Options, and Criteria".
  • p. 8 Related Taxonomies and Frameworks
Coutrix and Nigay[14] as well as Dubois and Gray[17]
  • p. 5 Tradeoffs
    Questions Options and Criteria (QOC)

Judge's note: The page 8 image shows 'Nigay[14]' and 'Gray[17]' with no space, unlike the paper's other citations. The page 5 image shows 'Questions Options and Criteria (QOC)', while the page 10 image shows ref 30 titled 'Questions, Options, and Criteria'.

Typo Redundant phrasing: "This is a tradeoff of reality over accessibility in favor of reality."
  • p. 7 Case Study 2, Tradeoffs, Safari paragraph
tradeoff of reality over accessibility in favor of reality
  • p. 7 Case Study 2, Tradeoffs, Safari paragraph
This is a tradeoff of reality over accessibility in favor of reality.

Judge's note: The page 7 image (Safari paragraph) shows the italic 'reality over accessibility' followed by 'in favor of reality'. The direction is stated twice. The meaning (accessibility given up for reality) can be recovered from the preceding sentences.

Typo Editor names in ref 24 are garbled: "Direct Manipulation Interfaces. Draper, D.A.N.a.S.W. ed. User Centered System Design".
  • p. 9 Reference 24
    Draper, D.A.N.a.S.W. ed.

Judge's note: The page 9 image shows 'Draper, D.A.N.a.S.W. ed.', which is evidently a mangled 'Norman, D.A. and Draper, S.W. (eds.)'. Ref 24 continues on page 10 with 'User Centered System Design'.

Typo Ref 5 author surname printed "Kobayash, T." (presumably "Kobayashi").
  • p. 9 Reference 5
    Kobayash, T.
  • p. 9 Reference 5
    Bae, S.-H., Kobayash, T., Kijima, R.

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: that the co-author's surname is Kobayashi. The page 9 image shows 'Bae, S.-H., Kobayash, T., Kijima, R. and Kim, W.-S.'.

  • p. 10 Reference 44
Human-Computer Interaction in the New Millenium

Computer Interaction in the New Millenium

Judge's note: The page 10 image shows 'Millenium' in both ref 44 and ref 47.
