Poisson Image Editing

ACM SIGGRAPH 2003 Papers, 2003 · paper · Computer science

Introduces image-editing tools based on solving Poisson equations. They allow seamless importing of opaque or transparent source regions into an image, and seamless changes to the texture, illumination or color within a selected region, or making a selection tileable.

Substance v_pq is defined as "the projection of v((p+q)/2) on the oriented edge [p,q], i.e., v_pq = v((p+q)/2)·\vec{pq}", but Eqs. (6), (11), (13) and (15) use the p − q orientation (e.g. v_pq = g_p − g_q).
  • p. 3 Discrete Poisson solver, definition below Eq. (6)
    vpq = v( p+q 2 )·⃗pq
  • p. 3 Eq. (11)
    vpq = gp −gq
  • p. 3 Discrete Poisson solver, text after Eq. (6)
    vpq = v( p+q

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Read Eqs. (6), (7) and (11) and the definition on the page 3 crops, and reworked the step myself. Taking \vec{pq} = q − p (the usual meaning, and the paper does not define it otherwise), a first-order expansion gives ∇g((p+q)/2)·(q−p) ≈ g_q − g_p. Eq. (11) instead sets v_pq = g_p − g_q. The objective (f_p − f_q − v_pq)^2 in (6) is a discretisation of |∇f − v|^2 only if v_pq ≈ v·(p − q). Differentiating (6) with respect to f_p gives (7), which is consistent with v_pq = g_p − g_q (the discrete Laplacian of g). So Eqs. (6), (7) and (11) agree with one another, and only the projection definition has the opposite sign. Only the authors can say whether \vec{pq} was meant to point from q to p.

Substance Eq. (15), described as "the discrete version of (14)" with v(x) = M(x)∇f*(x), prints v_pq = "f_p − f_q if an edge lies between p and q" using the unknown f rather than the known image f* (f*_p − f*_q).
  • p. 5 Section 4, Texture flattening, Eq. (15)
    fp −fq if an edge lies between p and q,
  • p. 5 Eq. (14)
    v(x) = M(x)∇f ∗(x)
  • p. 5 Section 4, Texture flattening, Eq. (15)
    fp −fq
  • p. 5 Eq. (15), Texture flattening
    f_p − f_q if an edge lies between p and q

Judge's note: The page 5 crops show Eq. (14) with ∇f* and Eq. (15) with plain f_p − f_q; there are no asterisks. In the paper f is the unknown interpolant and f* the known image. The analogous discrete Eq. (13) (text layer lines 414–415) writes f*_p − f*_q explicitly. As printed, the guidance would depend on the unknown, and (7) would no longer have a fixed right-hand side. The evident fix is f*_p − f*_q.

Reference or label First author of 'Object-Based Image Editing' printed as "BARRET, A." in the references and "[Barret and Cheney 2002]" in the text (likely Barrett, W. A.).

    BARRET, A., AND CHENEY, A. 2002.

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: that the TOG 21(3) 2002 paper is by William A. Barrett and Alan S. Cheney. The page 6 reference crop shows 'BARRET, A., AND CHENEY, A.', and the page 2 citation shows 'Barret and Cheney 2002'. The paper is consistent with itself, so this cannot be settled from the files.

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: that the SIGGRAPH 2000 proceedings were edited by K. Akeley and the 2001 proceedings by E. Fiume. The page 6 crops show 'E. Fiume, Ed.' on the 2000 entry and on the 2001 Hertzmann et al. entry. This points to a copy-paste slip, but it cannot be settled from the files.

4 minor (typos and the like; most checked by the judge only)
Typo Permission footer reads "Permission to make digital/hard copy of part of all of this work"; the intended wording is "part or all".
  • p. 1 Permission footer, p. 313
    Permission to make digital/hard copy of part of all of this work

Judge's note: The crop of the page 1 footer shows 'part of all of this work' as printed, so this is not an extraction artefact. As printed the phrase is ungrammatical and the fix is obvious.

Typo Missing conjunction: "as in the face touch-up example in Fig. 2 (top row) the texture swap example in Fig. 4 (bottom row)" — 'and' is missing between the two examples.

Judge's note: The page 3 crop shows the two examples run together with no 'and' or comma between them. There is no line-break artefact.
