Image Quilting for Texture Synthesis and Transfer
Proceedings of the 28th annual conference on Computer graphics and interactive techniques, 2001 · paper · Computer science
Introduces image quilting, which creates new images by stitching together small patches of existing ones. It is used for texture synthesis and for texture transfer, re-rendering an object in another image's texture, without needing 3D information.

Reference or label Ref [14]: "Preattentive texture discrimination with early vision mechanism. JOSA-A, 5(5):923–932, May 1990." — the volume number (5) does not match the 1990 date (likely 7(5)).

Only the authors can say what is right here.
Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: JOSA A began with vol. 1 in 1984, so 1990 is vol. 7. Malik & Perona appeared in JOSA A 7(5):923–932, 1990, with the title ending 'mechanisms'. The crop of p.6 shows '5(5):923–932, May 1990' and 'mechanism'. Only the authors or the journal record can settle this.

Reference or label Ref [22]: "International Journal of Computer Vision, 27(2):1–20, March/April 1998." — the page range '1–20' is likely wrong (the published pages are 107–126).

27(2):1–20, March/April 1998.
Only the authors can say what is right here.
Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: Zhu, Wu & Mumford, 'Filters, random fields and maximum entropy (FRAME)', appeared in IJCV 27(2):107–126, 1998. The p.6 image shows '27(2):1–20'. Within the file, an issue-2 article starting at page 1 is suspicious but not conclusive.

Reference or label Ref [17]: "International Journal of Computer Vision, 40(1):49–71, December 2000." — the month is likely October 2000.

40(1):49–71, December 2000
Only the authors can say what is right here.
Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: IJCV vol. 40, no. 1 is the October 2000 issue. The crop of p.6 shows 'December 2000'. A minor bibliographic detail that the file alone cannot settle.

Typo Introduction, para 1: "transfer texture from one object to anther" — 'anther' should be 'another'.

- p. 2 1.2 Motivation

- p. 2 1.2 Motivation

Judge's note: The misspelling is in the typeset text in the crop of p.1. The other typos bundled in reviewer note 4 ('waisted', 'an very', 'A easier') are judged in their own clusters (C004, C005, C003), so this verdict covers 'anther' only.

Typo Section 1.1: "Xu el.al. [21]" — 'el.al.' should be 'et al.' (written 'et.al.' elsewhere, e.g. 'Xu et.al. [21]' in Fig. 6).

Judge's note: The page 1 crop shows 'Xu el.al.' in the typeset text. Fig. 6 on p.6 has 'Xu et.al.', and 'Praun et.al.' and 'Liang et.al.' also appear.

Typo Section 1.1: "A easier problem is to enforce statistics locally" — should be 'An easier problem'.
- p. 2 Section 1.1, para 2
A easier problem is to enforce statistics locally
Judge's note: The crop of p.2 shows 'A' at the end of one line and 'easier problem' at the start of the next, in the typeset text.

Typo Section 2.1, after Eq. (1): "the end of the minimal vertical path though the surface" — 'though' should be 'through'.
- p. 3 Section 2.1, paragraph after Eq. 1
the end of the minimal vertical path though the surface
Judge's note: The crop of p.3 shows 'path though the surface'. The paragraph above correctly reads 'cut through this surface'.

Typo Section 3: "Here, the correspondence map are the (luminance) image intensities" — singular subject with plural verb; 'map is' (or 'maps are').
- p. 5 Section 3, para 2
the correspondence map are the (luminance) image intensities
Judge's note: The crop of p.5 shows the text as printed. Later in the section the plural 'correspondence maps are' is used correctly.

Typo Section 3: "For texture transfer, image being synthesized must respect two independent constraints: (a) the output are legitimate, synthesized examples" — 'output are' disagrees in number, and an article is missing before 'image being synthesized'.
- p. 5 Section 3, para 3
(a) the output are legitimate, synthesized examples of the source texture
- p. 5 Section 3
(a) the output are legitimate, synthesized
Judge's note: Seen in the typeset text in the crop of p.5 (right column). The meaning is clear, so this is a cosmetic grammar slip.

Typo Ref [4]: "Kurt W. Fleisher, and D. H. Salsin" — 'Salsin' should be 'Salesin', the spelling used in refs [11] ('D.H. Salesin') and [19] ('D. H. Salesin').

Judge's note: The reference list on p.6 shows 'Salsin' in [4] and 'Salesin' in [11] and [19]. The inconsistency within the list shows that [4] is the misspelling. 'Fleisher' is judged in C012.

- p. 6 References [13]
L. Liang, C. Liu, , Y. Xu
Judge's note: The crop of p.6 shows the doubled comma, so it is not an extraction artefact.

Only the authors can say what is right here.
Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: the co-author of 'Computer-generated watercolor' (SIGGRAPH 97) is Kurt W. Fleischer. The page image shows 'Fleisher'. The only point that can be checked in the file is format: within entry [4] this is the only author given with a full first name. Other entries ([18], [20], [22]) do use full names, so the mixed style is not a defect on its own.
