Reduced Lung-Cancer Mortality with Low-Dose Computed Tomographic Screening
2011 · paper · Clinical trials
A randomized trial of 53,454 high-risk people comparing three annual low-dose CT screenings with chest radiography. CT screening reduced lung-cancer deaths by 20.0% and all-cause deaths by 6.7%, though most positive screens were false positives.

None that passed a second check.
7 minor (typos and the like; most checked by the judge only)
Typo The same term is spelled "Over-diagnosis" and then "overdiagnosis" in one paragraph of the Discussion (p9); everywhere else the paper uses "overdiagnosis".
- p. 9 Discussion, last paragraph
Over-diagnosis, a major source of controversy
- p. 9 Discussion, same paragraph
magnitude of overdiagnosis in the NLST
Judge's note: The crop shows "Over-diagnosis," in the middle of a line, so the hyphen is not a line-break hyphen. The next sentence and later text (p10, ref 28) use "overdiagnosis". This is a cosmetic inconsistency in spelling.

Typo Reference 23 prints the second author as "Branbilla E" ("Travis WD, Branbilla E, Noguchi M, et al.").
- p. 12 Reference list, ref 23
Travis WD, Branbilla E, Noguchi M, et al.
- p. 12 Reference 23
Travis WD, Branbilla E, Noguchi M
Only the authors can say what is right here.
Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: the correct spelling of the second author of the 2011 IASLC/ATS/ERS adenocarcinoma classification is Brambilla. The p12 crop shows "Branbilla" in print, so this is not an extraction artefact.

Typo The Table 3 footnote † prints the screening round as "Tl" ("161 at Tl", "26 at Tl") where everywhere else it is T1.
- p. 17 Table 3, footnote †
161 at Tl, and 141 at T2
Judge's note: In the p17 page image the footnote glyphs look like "Tl". The text layer also encodes a lowercase l twice in that footnote, while the column headers read T1. This is a cosmetic typo.

Typo The Table 5 units row reads "number/total umber (percent)"; it should read "number/total number (percent)".
- p. 19 Table 5, unit row under column headers
number/total umber (percent)
Judge's note: The p19 page image shows "umber". The same units row in Table 6 (p21) is spelled "number/total number (percent)".

Typo A Table 5 row label is printed with no space between two words: "Non-small-cell carcinoma orother§".
- p. 19 Table 5, histologic type row
Non-small-cell carcinoma orother
Judge's note: In the p19 page image, "orother" appears fused, directly before the § mark. Table 6 prints "or other" in its radiography section.

Typo Table 6 prints "Branch ioloalveolar carcinoma" in both group sections; the term should be "Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma".
- p. 21 Table 6, first row of Low-dose CT group
Branch ioloalveolar carcinoma
Judge's note: The p21 page image shows "Branch ioloalveolar" in both the low-dose CT section and the radiography section. Table 5 spells it "Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma".
Second check: none (judge only)
Report a problem with this finding
Typo In Table 6, one histology category under the same footnote † is labelled "Non-small-cell carcinoma, other" in the CT section and "Non-small-cell carcinoma or other" in the radiography section.
- p. 21 Table 6, Low-dose CT group row
Non-small-cell carcinoma, other
- p. 21 Table 6, Radiography group row
Non-small-cell carcinoma or other
Judge's note: The p21 image shows both forms, each with the † mark. The meaning does not change, so this is a cosmetic inconsistency. It is a separate defect from the missing space in Table 5 (C006).
