Stenting versus Endarterectomy for Treatment of Carotid-Artery Stenosis
2010 · paper · Clinical trials
Concerns the CREST trial comparing carotid-artery stenting with endarterectomy for treating carotid-artery stenosis. The text provided contains only author disclosures, so findings are not shown.

Wording The sample-size statement gives detectable hazard-ratio bounds "of less than 0.54 or more than 1.49". These are not reciprocal, and the text does not say how the lower bound was derived.
- p. 5 Statistical Analyses, sample size
less than 0.54 or more than 1.49
- p. 5 Statistical Analyses, sample size
a hazard ratio for the primary end point of less than 0.54 or more than 1.49
Only the authors can say what is right here.
Judge's note: Page 5 image confirms the printed values. With equal allocation and a two-sided test of proportional hazards, power is symmetric on the log scale, so the bounds would normally be reciprocal (1/1.49 ≈ 0.67). A fixed absolute difference of ±1.2 points would instead give bounds equidistant from 1 (≈0.51 and 1.49). 0.54 fits neither convention. The protocol is in a supplement that is not among the files. Query to the authors: how was the lower bound of 0.54 obtained?

Typo Dr. Popma's disclosure spells the same company two ways: "Medtronic, Ablomed, AstraZeneca" and later "Abbott Vascular, and Abiomed".
- p. 1 Disclosures, Dr. Popma
Medtronic, Ablomed, AstraZeneca
- p. 1 Disclosures, Dr. Popma
Ablomed, AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb; and grant support from Cordis, Medtronic, Boston Scientific, Abbott Vascular, and Abiomed
Judge's note: The crop of page 1 shows both spellings in the same sentence. Because the paper itself prints "Abiomed", "Ablomed" is an internal inconsistency and a misspelling.

Typo The reprint address prints the street number with a stray space: "Griffin 304, 450 0 San Pablo Rd."
- p. 1 Reprint address footnote
450 0 San Pablo Rd.
Judge's note: The page 1 crop shows a visible gap inside the street number, so this is not an extraction artefact. The correct number (4500) rests on outside knowledge, but a split number is a typesetting defect either way.

Typo The Methods heading "CENTERS AND INVESTIGATIONS" heads a section about centers and the certification of surgeons and interventionists (investigators); it contains no investigations.
- p. 3 Methods subsection heading
CENTERS AND INVESTIGATIONS
Only the authors can say what is right here.
Judge's note: Page 3 image: the section text covers 108 US and 9 Canadian centers, the required team members, and certification of 477 surgeons and 224 interventionists. "INVESTIGATORS" appears to be intended. This is a wording slip in the heading and changes no content.

Typo A Results subsection heading is misspelled "POST HOC ANALYES" (should be "ANALYSES").
- p. 6 Results, subsection heading
POST HOC ANALYES
Judge's note: Page 6 image shows the misspelling in the typeset heading. The preceding heading reads "PRESPECIFIED SECONDARY ANALYSES".

Typo Reference 9 lists the second author as "Hopkins LN, Rougin GS, Chakhtoura EY"; elsewhere the paper spells this author "Roubin".
- p. 11 Reference 9
Hopkins LN, Rougin GS, Chakhtoura EY
- p. 11 Reference list, ref 9
Hopkins LN, Rougin GS, Chakhtoura EY, et al.
Judge's note: Page 11 image shows "Rougin GS" in ref 9, while ref 10 ("Roubin G"), ref 23 ("Roubin GS") and the byline and disclosures (Dr. Roubin) use Roubin. This is an internal inconsistency.

Typo Reference 16 lists a co-author as "McHomey CA" (presumably McHorney).
- p. 11 Reference 16
McHomey CA
Only the authors can say what is right here.
Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: the SF-36 co-author's surname is McHorney. The page 11 crop clearly shows "McHomey" as printed; no other spelling appears in the files.

Typo In Table 1, the endarterectomy cell for "Aspirin plus either clopidogrel or ticlopidine for 4 wk" is blank, while the other stenting-only rows show a dash.
- p. 15 Table 1, row 'Aspirin plus either clopidogrel or ticlopidine for 4 wk'
Aspirin plus either clopidogrel or ticlopidine for 4 wk
Judge's note: Page 15 image: neighbouring stenting-only rows (e.g. "Any antiplatelet therapy 99.0 —") show a dash in the CEA column, but this row is empty. The footnote cited by the reviewer, "Dashes indicate not applicable", was not checked, so the finding rests on the inconsistency with neighbouring rows.

Typo The Table 3 4-year hazard-ratio column header reads "Hazard Ratio for CAS CEA (95% CI)" without "vs."
- p. 19 Table 3, 4-year period column header
Ratio for CAS CEA
- p. 19 Table 3 header
CAS CEA
Judge's note: Upright page 19 image: the periprocedural column reads "Hazard Ratio for CAS vs. CEA", but the 4-year column omits "vs.". This is cosmetic, because the comparison direction is clear from the other header.
