6 minor (typos and the like; most checked by the judge only)
Reference or label Reference 19 ends "...17th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections; San Francisco. February 27–March 2, 2010; abstract" with no abstract number.
  • p. 10 Reference list, ref 19 (cited in Discussion, p7, for hair analysis)
    February 27–March 2, 2010; abstract

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: The page 10 crop shows the entry ending at 'abstract' with nothing after it, so this is not an extraction artefact. The conference and dates are given, but the abstract locator is missing. Only the authors can supply the number.

Wording Methods: "During screening, a computer-assisted structured interview collected information about education level, self-identified sex, and alcohol use, along with subjects’ perceived study-group assignment at week 12". Read literally, this puts a week-12 assessment inside the screening interview.
  • p. 3 Methods, Study Visits
During screening, a computer-assisted structured interview collected information about education level, self-identified sex, and alcohol use, along with subjects’ perceived study-group assignment at week 12.
  • p. 4 Results, Follow-up and Adherence
Most subjects said they did not know their study-group assignment at week 12

Judge's note: The page 3 text reads as quoted. The Results on pages 4-5 treat perceived assignment as a week-12 assessment (Table S3). The intended meaning is easy to infer, but the sentence as printed merges two timepoints. This is a wording ambiguity.

Wording "We enrolled 13 subjects with chronic HBV infection ... and acute HBV infection was reported ... in 3 additional subjects ... All the HBV infections resolved with detectable levels of immunity." It is unclear whether 'all' also covers the 13 chronic infections.
  • p. 4 Results, Study Subjects, HBV paragraph
All the HBV infections resolved with detectable levels of immunity.
  • p. 4 Results, Study Subjects, HBV paragraph
We enrolled 13 subjects with chronic HBV infection

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Partly rests on outside knowledge: chronic HBV infection does not usually resolve to immunity. The page 4 text reads as quoted. Table 1 lists current HBV infection as 7 and 6, which gives the 13. As written, 'All the HBV infections' covers the chronic cases as well as the 3 acute ones. Only the authors can say whether it was meant to cover the acute infections only.

Typo Abstract has a duplicated 'of': "the study drug was detected in 22 of 43 of seronegative subjects (51%)"; the body text reads "22 of 43 seronegative control subjects".
  • p. 1 Abstract, Results
detected in 22 of 43 of seronegative
  • p. 1
detected in 22 of 43 of seronegative subjects (51%)

Judge's note: I checked the crop of the page 1 abstract. The extra 'of' is printed there, so this is not an extraction artefact. The body text on page 6 reads "22 of 43 seronegative control subjects (51%)".

Typo Methods name the sponsor as "the National Institute of Health’s Division of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (DAIDS)", whereas elsewhere the paper says "National Institutes of Health".
  • p. 2 Methods, Protocol Development
was sponsored by the National Institute of Health’s Division of Acquired Immunodeficiency
  • p. 9 Acknowledgments
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health
  • p. 2 Methods, Protocol Development
National Institute of Health’s Division of Acquired Immunodeficiency
  • p. 9 Acknowledgments
National Institutes of Health, as a cooperative agreement

Judge's note: The page 2 crop shows the singular "National Institute of Health’s" as printed. The abstract funding line on page 1 and the Acknowledgments on page 9 both use "National Institutes of Health", so the paper is inconsistent with itself. This is a cosmetic name error.

Typo Appendix affiliations have stray punctuation: "the University of Colorado, Denver (P.L.A., L.R.B., J.-H.Z.).; Fundación Ecuatoriana Equidad".
  • p. 11 Appendix, author affiliations
    L.R.B., J.-H.Z.).;
  • p. 11 Appendix, affiliations
    the University of Colorado, Denver (P.L.A., L.R.B., J.-H.Z.).;

Judge's note: The page 11 crop shows ').;' as printed. Every other entry ends with ');'. This is a cosmetic punctuation error.
