Stent-Retriever Thrombectomy after Intravenous t-PA vs. t-PA Alone in Stroke

2015 · paper · Clinical trials

A randomized trial of stent-retriever thrombectomy plus intravenous t-PA versus t-PA alone in 196 stroke patients with proximal occlusions. Thrombectomy reduced disability at 90 days, with functional independence in 60% versus 35%; the trial stopped early for efficacy.

Wording In Figure 2, the age subgroups list "≥70 yr 83" and "<70 yr 106" patients, which sum to 189, but the Overall row gives 191.
  • p. 9 Figure 2, Age rows
    ≥70 yr 83; <70 yr 106
  • p. 9 Figure 2, Overall row
    Overall 191

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Checked the page 9 image. The age counts are 83 and 106, Overall is 191, and the geographic counts (129+62) give 191. The Table 1 footnote explains missing sex for 1 patient and missing hospital site and occlusion site for some patients. It says nothing about missing age, so the 2-patient shortfall in the age strata is unexplained. The NIHSS (110+80) and time-to-randomization (96+94) strata also total 190, with no stated reason. Only the authors can say whether the age counts are wrong or some patients are excluded for a reason not given.

Typo Reference 19 prints "Solitairewith the Intention for Thrombectomy as Primary Endovascular Treatment" with no space between "Solitaire" and "with".

    Solitairewith the Intention for Thrombec-

Judge's note: The crop of page 11 shows "Solitairewith" run together in the printed reference, so this is not an extraction artefact. Elsewhere the paper writes "Solitaire with the Intention for Thrombectomy". This is a cosmetic missing space; a trademark symbol may have been dropped there.
