Effects of Intensive Glucose Lowering in Type 2 Diabetes

Journal of Vascular Surgery, 2008 · paper · Clinical trials

A randomized study of 10,251 people with type 2 diabetes comparing intensive glucose lowering (HbA1c below 6.0%) with standard therapy. Intensive therapy increased mortality, was stopped after 3.5 years, and did not significantly reduce major cardiovascular events.

Substance Figure 3 legend: 'Data regarding glycated hemoglobin levels at baseline are presented for 10,288 patients because a baseline level was not available for 23 patients'; 10,251 − 23 = 10,228.

Judge's note: Page 19 shows a total of 10,251 and HbA1c subgroup counts of 4,868 and 5,360, which sum to 10,228. The legend's 10,288 is larger than the whole randomized cohort, so no other analysis set can explain it; the digits look transposed.

Reference or label Reference 6 is printed as 'Can J Diabetes. 2003; 23(Suppl 2):S1–S152.'; the 2003 CDA guidelines supplement is reportedly volume 27.

    Can J Diabetes. 2003; 23(Suppl 2):S1–S152.

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: that the 2003 CDA guidelines appeared in Can J Diabetes volume 27, not 23. The page 15 crop shows volume 23 as quoted.

Reference or label Table 1 labels potassium 'Potassium (mg/dl)' with values 4.5±0.4 and 4.5±0.7, but the footnote factor 'multiply by 0.2558' would turn 4.5 into about 1.15 mmol/L.

  • p. 21 Table 1 footnote
To convert the values for potassium to millimoles per liter, multiply by 0.2558

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Rests on outside knowledge: that normal serum potassium is about 3.5–5.0 mmol/L, so 4.5 looks like a mmol/L value rather than mg/dl. Page 21 shows the mg/dl label and the 0.2558 conversion factor. The unit label appears to be wrong; the authors should confirm.

Wording Table 3, never smoked, intensive therapy: '2093 (40.9)', but 2093/5128 = 40.8%.
  • p. 24 Table 3, Cigarette-smoking status, Never, intensive therapy
    2093 (40.9)

Only the authors can say what is right here.

Judge's note: Page 24 shows N = 5128, and the four smoking rows sum to 5128. 2093/5128 is 40.82%, which rounds to 40.8. The other cells reproduce correctly. The Table 3 footnote says 'Percentages may not total 100 because of rounding', so rounding was not forced to 100; the printed 40.9 appears to be off by 0.1.
